I've built small workplace pensions with several employers — what happens to them when I switch jobs?
Moving between several Dutch employers leaves pension entitlements scattered across as many funds, and newcomers often expect to have to chase each one down. Automatic transfer rules have swept up small pots since 2019, with value thresholds and a cut-off date that determine which older pots still need finding by hand.
Nothing you need to chase, mostly. Since 2019, Dutch pension funds have been required to automatically transfer "small" pension pots — for 2026, anything paying out between €2 and €632.63 a year gross — to your new employer's pension fund when you change jobs, without needing your consent; they just have to notify you it's happened. It folds into whatever you're building with the new employer rather than sitting stranded with a fund you no longer have a relationship with. Pots below €2 a year lapse entirely and aren't transferred. The one thing worth doing yourself is checking mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl periodically — it's the official aggregator pulling together everything you've accrued across every employer and pension fund, including AOW, and it's the easiest way to catch a pot that somehow didn't get swept up automatically, or to see the full picture before making any decisions about your retirement income. It won't catch everything from before 2019, when this automatic-transfer rule didn't yet exist, so older small pensions from early jobs are worth double-checking manually.
