How much paid partner/parental leave do fathers and partners actually get?

Partner leave in the Netherlands is spread across two separate schemes with different pay rates, different funders and different deadlines, which is why it is widely written off as "about a week". Expecting parents planning time around a due date can lose paid weeks simply by taking them at the wrong point.

More than a lot of newcomers expect, spread across two separate schemes. Right after the birth, partners get one week of geboorteverlof at full pay (100%, paid directly by the employer), which has to be taken within four weeks of the birth. On top of that, aanvullend geboorteverlof gives up to five more weeks, taken any time in the first six months, paid at 70% of salary — capped at 70% of the maximum daily wage — via a UWV benefit that the employer claims and pays out. Separately, ouderschapsverlof (parental leave, available to both parents) totals 26 times your weekly working hours per child, usable up until the child turns 8 — but only the first 9 weeks are paid, at that same 70%-of-capped-salary rate, and only if taken within the child's first year; the remaining weeks are unpaid unless your employer's CAO says otherwise. Stacked together, that's meaningfully more paid time around a birth than the "just two weeks" reputation the Netherlands sometimes has among expats — but the paid ouderschapsverlof weeks specifically require using them before the first birthday, so timing matters if you want the paid rate rather than losing it to the unpaid tail end.
