Eigen Risico

How does eigen risico actually work? So, say, I picked my eigen risico to be €385 for the year. Do I NOT pay anything up to €385 or is the other way around (I do pay ONLY up to €385)? Thanks in advance

The second one. You pay the first €385 yourself, and after that the insurer takes over. So if you get a €1,200 hospital bill, you pay €385 of it and the insurer pays the remaining €815. If your first bill of the year is €120, you pay the whole €120 and you have €265 of eigen risico left. Once you've paid €385 in total, everything else that year is covered. On 1 January it resets to zero. One correction: you didn't pick the €385, that's the compulsory amount everyone has in 2026. You can voluntarily add up to €500 on top of it for a lower premium, but the €385 itself is fixed. Worth knowing: your huisarts never counts towards it, and neither does care for children under 18.
