Between landing and signing a lease, plenty of arrivals are living out of a hotel or hostel and wondering whether that address can carry them through registration. Answers vary sharply from one gemeente (municipality) to the next, which is why the same question keeps attracting flatly contradictory replies.
Sometimes, but don't count on it, and it's worth knowing what you're actually registering for. If you only need an RNI (non-resident) BSN because you're here under four months, you don't need any address at all, hotel or otherwise — this question really matters for people trying to do full BRP (municipal) registration. There, hotel and hostel addresses are handled inconsistently: a handful of aparthotels and long-stay hotels, mostly in Amsterdam, have formal arrangements with the gemeente specifically so long-term guests can register there, but a standard tourist hotel almost never works, since most gemeenten want proof you'll be at an address for at least four months, which a hotel booking doesn't show. Hostels are even less likely to qualify. If you're stuck without long-term housing, ask reception directly whether your specific place has a registration agreement, or fall back on RNI registration now and a briefadres later once you've found something more settled. Rules genuinely differ gemeente by gemeente, so what works in Rotterdam may not fly in Utrecht.
